About Paul Cayard

Paul Cayard is one of America’s most recognized and accomplished sailors.

Cayard, an eight time world champion, seven time America’s Cup competitor, has twice circumnavigated the world, becoming the first American to win the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1998, and placing second with the Disney syndicate Pirates of the Caribbean in the 2005-2006 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. He is a two time Olympian (1984 and 2004) and one of the very few who have competed at the top level in these three diverse disciplines within the sport of sailing.

With hundreds of thousands of miles at sea over the past 40 years, Cayard’s sailing exploits from the America’s Cup to the Roaring 40’s and the icebergs of the Southern Ocean have given him a wealth of experience, proving his leadership skills sometimes in harrowing moments in the Southern ocean where lives were on the line.

Beyond his skill at the helm, Cayard is one of the sport’s pioneers in marketing and the management of sailing teams which includes working with Fortune 500 companies such as Disney, Ford, and United Technologies. Cayard is also a sought after public speaker, his ability to recount fascinating and life changing moments at sea has captivated audiences all over the world. Fluent in English, French and Italian, Cayard frequently speaks at conferences around the globe and commentates on sailing including during the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007 for RAI.

A Rolex Ambassador since 1999 Cayard also has endorsed various brands including Oakley and Zegna.

Cayard’s accolades include induction to the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2011, Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2020 and the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 2025.

Cayard was born in San Francisco and currently resides in La Jolla.

RC44 Cagliari Cup

Great day for Artemis Racing. Both Artemis and Katusha won all their matches today, four wins for Katusha and three for Artemis. This puts Katusha in a tie with TeamAqua for first place at this event and Artemis in a tie with ORACLE for third place. Not sure at this time how the ties will […]

Bol d’Or

Geneva, It was a pretty fast race this year as a strong south westerly breeze pushed the fastest boats, the D35’s down to the east end of the lake in 2,5 hours, right on record time. However the way back was slower as the wind died in a few spots. Over 500 boats started this […]

D35 Sogeti Cup

Geneva, Artemis Racing had two excellent scores in the first two races of the day with a 2, 4 and had taken the lead in the regatta. At the first mark of the third race, Okalys, crashed into us while on port tack and that ended our day. As we were on starboard tack, we […]

D35 Sogeti Cup

Geneva, Switzerland I did not realize that yesterday’s Geneve-Rolle-Geneve was a stand alone race and counts in the season championship as a regatta, same value as the first two regattas were we finished 3rd and 5th respectively. So after yesterday’s 2nd place, Artemis Racing was tied for first place in the season with Foncia and […]

D-35 Geneve-Rolle-Geneve

Geneva Great day for Artemis Racing today on Lake Geneva. With Torbjorn Tornqvist at the helm, we finished second in the 28 mile “offshore” race known as the “Geneve-Rolle-Geneve”. 300 boats participated in the classic which has taken place for more than 60 years. The starting line was 1 mile long and divided into three […]

Realstone Cup – D-35

Crans, Switzerland A pessimistic forecast gave way to the best day of wind here in Crans for the Realstone Cup. Foncia, who finished 8th I believe in the first event two weeks ago, won this event easily. 4 races were held today in winds varying from south to north and 3 knots to 15 knots. […]

Realstone Cup – D-35

Crans, Switzerland Today was the first day of racing for the D-35 fleet in the second event of the season, the Realstone Grand Prix d Crans. Unfortunately the wind was almost non existent but we did manage to have one race in very light conditions of 6 knots dropping to 4 at the finish. Onboard […]

RC44 Austria

One race here in Austria on the final day for the RC44 fleet. It was a rainy and cold day….temperature about 10C. It hailed at one point. Oracle Racing continued their dominance of the event by winning the only race of the day. Onboard Katusha, we had our worst race of the event finishing 10th […]

RC 44 Austria

Gmunden, Austria A very light wind day today on Lake Traunsee. There was no wind until 1400 and then it was very light and unstable. We had one bad race, one mediocre race. We dropped to 5th place overall. Oracle is still leading, but two good races by Aqua have pulled them to within 5 […]

RC 44 Austria

A tough day today on Katusha and we are now fourth overall. Three races were held and Oracle had great scores in the second two of the three so is well in front now. I did not sail well today as tactician and got pretty frustrated by it all. Our helmsperson for this regatta is […]
