About Paul Cayard

Paul Cayard is one of America’s most recognized and accomplished sailors.

Cayard, an eight time world champion, seven time America’s Cup competitor, has twice circumnavigated the world, becoming the first American to win the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1998, and placing second with the Disney syndicate Pirates of the Caribbean in the 2005-2006 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. He is a two time Olympian (1984 and 2004) and one of the very few who have competed at the top level in these three diverse disciplines within the sport of sailing.

With hundreds of thousands of miles at sea over the past 40 years, Cayard’s sailing exploits from the America’s Cup to the Roaring 40’s and the icebergs of the Southern Ocean have given him a wealth of experience, proving his leadership skills sometimes in harrowing moments in the Southern ocean where lives were on the line.

Beyond his skill at the helm, Cayard is one of the sport’s pioneers in marketing and the management of sailing teams which includes working with Fortune 500 companies such as Disney, Ford, and United Technologies. Cayard is also a sought after public speaker, his ability to recount fascinating and life changing moments at sea has captivated audiences all over the world. Fluent in English, French and Italian, Cayard frequently speaks at conferences around the globe and commentates on sailing including during the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007 for RAI.

A Rolex Ambassador since 1999 Cayard also has endorsed various brands including Oakley and Zegna.

Cayard’s accolades include induction to the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2011, Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2020 and the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 2025.

Cayard was born in San Francisco and currently resides in La Jolla.

Star North American Championship-Final

Oxford, Maryland One race was held today on the Choptank in 7-10 knots and rain. The wind was just as shifty as it has been all week. Brian and I had a decent start and sailed pretty well not he first leg (and were lucky that our side worked out well) to round the first […]

Star North American Championship-Day 3

Oxford, Maryland Two races were held today with a shifty northeasterly breeze that blew between 4 and 8 knots. Torben Grael and his crew Guilhherme Alimeida of Brazil dominated the day with a 2,3 which moved them into a 10 point lead going into tomorrow’s final race. Brian and I had a terrible first race. […]

Star North American Championship – Day 2

Oxford, Maryland Two races were held today on the Choptank in 5-10 knots of wind. Here it isn’t that the wind starts at 5 knots and builds to 10 or the reverse. Here the wind is 5-10 every minute of the day. And it shifts 30 degrees too. Brian and I finished 3rd in the […]

Star North American Championship-Day 1

Oxford, Maryland It was a long day on the water. 3 races starting at 11:00 and finishing at 16:45. So I am writing fast and there may be typos. It was a perfect clear blue sky today following thunder, lightening and rain last night. The wind was 6-9 knots form the west but at times […]

Oxford Fall Wind Up

Oxford, Maryland Two races were held today on the Choptank. (Love that word. Very appropriate as the water is choppy out there!) It was clear, cold and a brisk 50 degrees when we headed out to the race course at 0930. The wind was 7-12 from the west with 30 degree shifts today which made […]

Rolex Big Boat Series

San Francisco One race was scheduled for today. After a brief postponement waiting for wind, the race started at 11:30 under blue skies and a moderate 12 knot breeze. The course for all the fleets on the Fort Mason race track took us outside the Golden Gate bridge for to a buoy off Pt. Diablo. […]

Rolex Big Boat Series

San Francisco Two long races today for the J70 fleet. Once again we started the day on the Fort Mason race track. The committee signaled a three lap windward-leeward course in the 8-10 knot southwesterly breeze. The current was “flooding” once again so it was all about hitting the beach for relief. We had a […]

Rolex Big Boat Series

San Francisco Friday was a very good day for us on Double Trouble. In the first race we were on the Fort Mason race course with about 10 knots of wind. We were over the start line early and had to go back and restart putting us last in the 13 boat fleet. The current […]
